Kotaro Miyashiro is a freelance jewelry designer based in Brooklyn, NY, with over 30 years of experience designing for top fashion jewelry brands. He offers his expertise as a freelance designer to companies small or large. He also offers remote master classes for anyone interested in becoming a jewelry designer or if you are simply interested in learning more about the design process.
I am the son of a fine artist and jewelry designer, and grew up in New York City's SoHo and the West Village in the 1970's and 1980's. Much like Hollywood's portrayal of New York City artists in movies of that time, we lived in loft spaces where my father painted, created sculptures, ran a pottery studio, was a professional photographer, and made handcrafted jewelry. Being surrounded and nurtured by such creativity was wonderfully transformative. I learned by my father's side, and I still have fond memories of creating jewelry in our home, then selling those pieces on the summer streets of Greenwich Village.
Over the years, as that business thrived, we moved off the streets and into boutique and craft galleries across the country. In my late teens and early twenties, I became the company's head craftsman, specializing in chasing techniques that I used to hand-draw the designs and patterns on many of the pieces we sold. Eventually, I branched off and formed my own company, and I introduced new materials such as anodized niobium and 14kt gold into my designs.
When I got married and wanted to start a family, I made the decision to pivot from being self-employed to working for larger jewelry companies that offered health benefits and paid time off. Over the next two decades, I worked my way up from designer to creative director for some top fashion, bridge and fine jewelry companies and brands like, Brilliant Earth, Monet, Liz Claiborne, and Nadri.
Now that technology has made working remotely convenient and efficient, I am excited to offer my expertise and talent to a wide array of companies that may not have had access to a designer of my caliber in the past. Contact me and let's see what we can accomplish together.
*Resume available upon request
I can design 1 piece to 100 pieces: it's all up to you. I can work into a theme that you provide, or I can suggest ideas to you based on the style of product you sell. I work in Photoshop, so I will send you PowerPoint slides that group together my designs. I can also mock up the pieces on the appropriate body area to show scale.
Once you have decided on what designs you want to move forward with, I can provide detailed technical drawings to send to your model-maker or vendor.
Looking for a trend report of the latest trends in jewelry? I can provide that as well, and I will tailor it to your company's aesthetic.
Not sure which ideas to pursue, and wish you could see some visual support before deciding on a specific theme to invest in? A mood board may be just what you need to help pick your next concept.
Want to become a jewelry designer? Or, are you simply interested in learning more about the process of design? I offer remote, one-on-one lessons. My classes teach the fundamentals of being a designer: I cover the entire process, from researching trends to creating your own mood boards to designing and perfecting a collection.
Putting together your portfolio and you feel like you could use professional guidance? I have hired numerous designers over the years and I can advise you on building a top notch portfolio to make a lasting impression in your next interview.
As a general rule of thumb I charge $50 per hour but design fees may vary depending on the complexity and scope of the project.
Classes and portfolio consultations are also $50 an hour with a one hour minimum.
Contact me through the portal at the bottom of the page and we can discuss how I can apply my talents to your project.
